MATCH REPORT
Dundee West royals 2006’s went into match day 2 of the Jubilee Cup full of confidence, after a deserved victory against a decent Riverside team in the first game. It was always going to be a tough match against a very good, well organised Monifieth team.

Monifieth started quite strongly and got in Wests faces from the off. The wet pitch gave McColl a hard time in goal in the opening minutes – 2mins in McColl spilled the ball allowing Monifieth a golden chance, however the ball hit the side netting from a tight angle, with the goal gaping.

After the shaky start, West came in to the game and matched Monifieth, creating some chances. On 15mins McManamon rushed onto a through ball, but on his weaker left foot, shot wide of the post.

0-1: Monifieth broke through the backline on 18mins, and with West rushing back, an awkward tackle in the box gave the ref no choice but to award a penalty. Monifieth stepped up and scored, high into the top left corner, to make it 1-0.

West continued to play well despite going down, and McManamon broke free yet again on 22mins, and lifted the ball over the keeper to chip in, but the shot was just wide of the right post.

On 23mins, Smart received a booking for a foul on the wing. Luckily, the resulting free kick didn’t amount to a chance on goal for the visitors.

0-2: Monifieth added a second on 25mins, when their striker ran through a gap in defence, only for McColl to make an excellent save down low, however the ball broke free to the right, and left an easy follow up into the open net.

West created a half chance on 29mins, when Gilmurray shot from long range, wide on the right, but the ball was clear of the left post. 4 minutes later, Johnstone played a lovely defence splitting pass, slotting in McManamon, but yet again his strike was just wide of the mark.

Just before the halftime whistle, McManamon found himself onside and one-on-one with the keeper again, but on his weaker left foot hit the side netting.

Half-time: Dundee West Royals 0 – 2 Monifieth

The second half started evenly, with few clear chances for either side. However, a mix up in the West defence on 47mins gave Monifieth a great chance to add a third, but the striker shot wide into the side netting, in almost identical fashion to their chance in the first half.

On 51mins, McColl made a great save against the onrushing Monifieth striker to keep the game within touching distance. With Monifieth starting to dominate, a further string of saves by the West keeper kept the game at 2-0, with West struggling to get the ball up field.

0-3: On 57mins however, Monifieth took their chance and added a third, to take the game out of reach.

A change of formation seemed to even the game up, with 3 at the back and an extra man moved into centre midfield, and West started to rush forward to get back into the game.

0-4: Having tightened up and made some positive substitutions, it took a great Monifieth move to add a fourth, finishing with the striker rounding McColl.

With only 3mins left of the match, Tennant hit a shot from distance, but it didn’t trouble the keeper, falling wide of the mark.

Full time: Dundee West Royals 0-4 Monifieth

Although a comfortable victory in the end for the visitors, West can hold their heads high, matching a really strong and well drilled team for long periods of the match. But for a few preventable goals, and some luck at the other end, West may well have taken something from the game.
