MATCH REPORT
Dundee West Royals 2006’s faced a trip up to Brechin for their last group match in the Jubilee Cup. With Brechin only 3pts behind, West had to make sure not to slip up and get at least a point from the game to secure 2nd in the group.
After a tight opening few minutes between the sides, West almost broke through on 3mins, when Smith played a through ball into McManamon’s feet, but the Brechin defender was able to cut him out on the turn.
A minute later, McManamon played in his strike partner Paton down the right, and holding off the defender, Paton crossed to the back post but Johnstones shot was blocked.
On 5mins, Brechin created their first decent chance, when their striker broke through on goal, but Morris kept up and used his strength to get in front of the man and put the ball out for a corner.
West continued to press, with McManamon shooting wide from a Clark cross, and Johnstone forcing a good save from the Brechin keeper, with a long range effort.
On 12mins, West were caught napping, but were let off as the Brechin striker flashed it over, clean through on goal.
1-0: On 13mins, West went 1-0 up, with a superb move starting from the keeper. Crabb received the ball wide from McColl, played a simple pass up to Clark on the right wing, who took a neat first time touch into Smith in the middle, Smith then looked up and played a lovely diagonal pass into McManamon’s feet. With a defender still to beat, McManamon took a perfect first time touch to play the ball forward into the box, and slotted low past the keeper with his weaker left foot.
2-0: 22mins in, West added their second, with another good passing move. Johnstone played the ball wide to find Clark in space on the right, Clark took a touch and played a low cross into McManamons feet, and after having taken the pace off of the cross, the ball fell to Paton who smashed a great first time shot into the bottom corner, giving the keeper no chance.
3-0: West continued to dominate the first half, and then added another on 27mins. Tennant left the Brechin defenders for dead with some lovely footwork on the left hand side, then slid in Smith on the edge of the box, who then played it out to the opposite wing to find Clark in space. Clark hit it first time, with a beautiful cross to the penalty spot, and Paton got his head to it in front of the keeper, to cushion it into the net.
4-0: 5mins from HT, West scored a deserved fourth, with McManamon’s reactions in the box paying off. Johnstone hit a shot from distance, which wasn’t too difficult for the keeper, but the Brechin stopper spilled the catch, and McManamon followed up to pounce on the error and pass the ball into an empty net.
Half-time: Brechin City 0 – 4 Dundee West Royals
Dundee West started slowly in the second half, with Brechin coming out to try and turn the game around. Some sloppy defending and poor decision making gave Brechin the upper hand in the opening stages of the half.
4-1: Brechin were rewarded for their positive start to the half on 39mins, when a defensive error from West gave Brechin a one-on-one with McColl. The Brechin striker shot early from the edge of the box, and although McColl got down and got a good hand to the ball, it sneaked inside the post to claw a goal back for the home side.
West started to come back into the game after the slow start, but spurned a number of chances, most notably a low cross from McManamon which beat the keeper, but Paton was just inches short of sliding in at the back post to score. McManamon also forced the keeper into a great save, after a nice passing move between Johnstone and Paton put him through on goal.
Substitution 45mins = Singer off, Smart on.
On 47mins, McManamon had a chance for Wests fifth, with Johnstone playing a nice ball over the top, but the keeper was quick off of his line and was able to gather the ball before McManamon could lob it over his head.
5-1: West finally breached the Brechin goal in the second half on 51mins. Crabb put in a great cross from wide right, the ball fell to Tennant at the back post, but the keeper turned his top corner-bound effort round the post, resulting in a corner. West played the corner short to Smith, who fired a perfect cross into the penalty area, and McManamon rose and smashed a header into the roof of the net beyond the keeper.
5-2: Just a minute after scoring a lovely goal, West gifted a second to Brechin, with some poor marking in the area leaving three Brechin players fighting over a clear shot on goal, and they finished easily past a helpless McColl.
Substitution 55mins = Tennant and Paton off, Storrie and Gilmurray on. Clark to LW, Gilmurray to RW.
On 60mins, West could have added a sixth, when Gilmurray played in a great cross, but McManamons volley attempt was mishit and sailed wide.
West continued to press in the last 10mins of the game, with McManamon causing problems for Brechin, and forcing the keeper into 2 great saves from one-on-ones.
Substitution 67mins = McManamon off, Mitchell on.
