Dundee West v Riverside U16's Match Report

03/09/2018

Our third league fixture saw us back at Charlotte Street to face Riverside CSC today, ko 2pm.

Due to illness and holidays, a reshuffle of the team and formation was required as we were a bit light on the ground today.

Riverside started the better side, came out of the traps quicker and had a fair bit of possession. A physically strong outfit, they put our backline under a bit of pressure in the first quarter of an hour.

Charlie Greenshields kept the score level with a fine save, tipping a dipping effort over the bar.

On 23 minutes, West took the lead when a Lewis Thomson corner was knocked down into the area by Keir Skinner and from 7 yards, Ruari Henry volleyed home on his return after injury.

This goal settled the lads down and we began to grow in confidence and took the game to Riverside.

Two goals in quick succession put some breathing space between the sides. The first after 34 minutes was an excellent team goal, worked patiently from the back, through midfield. Ryley Duncan laid off into the overlapping Aiden Hutton who burst into the box on the left, looked up and found his brother Lewis. With a drop of the shoulder, creating a yard of space away from his marker, Lewis finished expertly into the bottom right hand corner.

One minute later, a through ball from Cavan McLaren sent Ryley clear and he held off the defender before sliding past the advancing keeper, great finish.

Lewis Thomson went close with a powerful strike but the keeper saved well.

HT 3-0

The second half started as we left off and we had plenty of the ball and were dominating for large spells without creating to many clear cut opportunities. The football and tempo of play was of good quality as we strived for more goals.

Riverside were always a threat up front but the backline of Aiden, Morgan Harrow and Lee Clark were resolute and all were outstanding.

We went further ahead on 68 minutes, Ryley picking up the ball 30 yards out on the left hand side and thundering a superb strike over the keeper's head into the far corner, 4-0.

Riverside pulled a goal back 3 minutes later when a high swerving free kick into the box was misjudged by Charlie and bounced into the corner of the net. A preventable goal to be fair but one that did not affect the overall result.

FT 4-1

The lads put in another great performance today, and thoroughly deserved their win against a hard working, strong Riverside team. Given the circumstances, this made the win even more pleasing and the attitude of the boys was first class and we can't ask for anymore as coaches. An all round excellent team performance from back to front. ?
