MATCH REPORT
After a close match against Monifieth, Dundee West Royals 2006’s were still high on confidence despite defeat, going in to the third cup match. The visitors were Broughty Panthers who had lost their previous two ties.

1-0: Almost from kick-off, Dundee West flew up the pitch starting well, and got an early reward when McManamon broke through the Broughty defence and slotted past the keeper, but his shot bounced back off of the post. The ball fell to Johnstone just inside the penalty area, who calmly stroked the ball into the open net to make it 1-0 West.

4mins in and Broughty mustered up a half chance hitting wide of the right post with a breakaway. West countered; Johnstone played in McManamon with an excellent through ball, but having rounded the keeper, McManamon was tackled by a backtracking defender on the line, and the ball went behind for a corner.

Broughty got up the pitch and kept some pressure on the West defence on 8mins, with 5 corners in a row almost producing an equaliser, but luckily West escaped after some clearances inside the area.

A few minutes later on 11mins, McManamon ran through on goal battling with the last defender, and having shrugged him off he forced the Panthers keeper into a good save. Second later the ball fell at Johnstone’s feet, but his long distance effort was narrowly wide of the left hand post.

2-0: Crabb received the ball up the right hand side on 15mins, and played a great whipped cross into McManamon, but the pace of the cross took it past both the West striker, and the Broughty keeper, and sailed into the net to make it 2-0. A great ’strike’!

3-0: Only a minute later, Smith played a lovely ball through into McManamon’s feet. He advanced and let fly, forcing the keeper to make a great save and parry to his left, but McManamon’s strike partner Gilmurray followed up with an easy pass into the open net, to make it 3-0 to West.

3-1: West were cruising, but on 17mins found themselves caught napping, and with a ball over the top, the onrushing Broughty striker knocked it past McColl into the right hand side, to pull a vital goal back.

After conceding a sloppy goal, McManamon found space just inside the box, but sliced his effort well wide on 20mins.

3-2: Continuing to look complacent West conceded another preventable goal on 21mins. The Broughty striker broke through the defence, forcing McColl out of his box to make a last ditch tackle, but having met the ball first, a ricochet back off of the striker left an easy finish to bring the game within reach for the visitors.

Moments after Broughty’s second, McManamon and Gilmurray exchanged a fantastic one-two, leaving McManamon clear on goal, but his powerful shot smashed off of the left hand post, and Broughty cleared their lines.

4-2: West started to dominate again, and the pressure paid off on 23mins, when Johnstone, despite being fouled, slotted the ball through to McManamon, who took the ball onto his favoured right foot before stroking the ball beyond the keeper into the left hand side of the net.

5-2: Only a minute later on 24mins, McManamon found space wide left, and having cut inside, leaving the defender for dead, he slid the ball inside to Tennant, for an easy finish 12yds out.

Another close chance on 26mins for West, when McManamon broke free again and lifted the ball over the keeper from the edge of the box, but unfortunately was too heavy-footed and the shot was high and clear of the bar.

6-2: Right on half time, Smith played a delightful dink over the defence, and having controlled the through ball, McManamon finished with ease to make it 6 before the whistle.

Half-time: Dundee West Royals 6 – 2 Broughty Panthers
Substitution at HT = Chalmers off, Mitchell on. Crabb to RB, Mitchell to RM.

Dundee West continued to dominate the second half, but the first clear chance came 9mins into the half, when McManamon rounded the keeper, but on his weaker left side, overran the ball wide of the post.

7-2: Persistence paid off a few minutes later, when substitute Mitchell passed the ball square into Smith from wide right. Smith settled the ball, knocked it forwards onto his favoured right foot, and his strike from the edge of the box nestled into the right hand side of the goal, giving the keeper no chance.

Substitution 49mins = Smith off, Singer on. Smart to CM, Singer to CB.

On 50mins, McManamon burst free yet again left of centre, but the Broughty keeper was quick off the mark, and saved with his feet to deny the striker.

8-2: A sublime goal on 53mins! Yet again McManamon and Gilmurray performed a lovely one-two, just inside the Broughty half on the counter, and McManamon gave the keeper no chance with a blistering strike high into the net to make it 8, and complete his hat-trick.

Substitution 53mins = McManamon off, Gibson on.

9-2: Tennant broke free wide on the left, but his cross rebounded off of the Broughty defenders, and with the ball bouncing across the edge of the box, Smart unleashed an unstoppable half-volley into the top left-hand corner to round off the scoring at 9-2

Substitution 59mins = Tennant off, Clark on.

After a quiet start to the half, McColl was called into action, pulling off a terrific save when Broughty hit a shot heading for the top corner.

West earned a free-kick within shooting distance with 8mins to play, but Smart’s shot proved comfortable for the keeper to catch at the near post.

Full time: Dundee West Royals 9-2 Broughty Panthers
Scorers: McManamon (3), Johnstone, Crabb, Gilmurray, Tennant, Smith, Smart

In the end, Dundee West won easily, however, they can learn from the complacency at 3-0, which may well have caused a turn-around against a better team. Two swift goals against the run of play, gave West the kick they needed to play as a team again, and control the game. Overall a great performance which all but seals 2nd place in the group providing they approach the last 2 fixtures the same way they ended this one!
